Ayu means 'life' and Veda means the 'knowledge'. Ayurveda is the knowledge of life; it is not only the system to cure the diseases but also a method to achieve 'perfect health”. It provides the ways to improve the quality of both physical and mental life. Kerala can claim as the birth place of AYURVEDA.
Ayurveda is said to be originated from 'Brahma' – the God of Srishti (Lord of creation). He transmitted this knowledge to 'Prajapathi'. Aswani Kumaras who received this knowledge from Prajapathi, and advised 'Indra' (the king of Gods) who in turn established the School of Medicines (Bharadwaja & Athreya) and school of Surgery (Susrutha) .Charaka, Susrutha, Vagbhata, Madhava, Sarangadhara, Bhavamisra and Kashyapa were the eminent scholars in Ayurveda.
Ayurveda is based on certain theories like Panchamahabhutha theory and Tridosha theory. Ayurveda believes that everything in this universe is made up of five basic elements. These five elements are earth, water, fire, air and ether or space and collectively they are termed as Panchmahabhuta. Ayurveda believes that every creature in the universe is made up of these five elements, which serve as the building blocks of life. Life doesn't exist without these five elements. The permutation and combination of these elements and its quantity in a given matter determines its properties. Tridoshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are biological derivatives of the five basic elements present in the Universe.
The word Panchakarma comprises of two words namely Pancha ie five and karma action or therapy ie five method to purify or eliminating vitiated doshas from body, they are Vamana (Emesis) Virechana (Purgatin) Anuvasana (oil enema) Niruha (decotion enema) Nasya (pouring oil in the nostrils).
